PICTURES FROM MY TRIP AROUND THE WORLD: #28
Location: Hong Kong harbor
It costs $10,000/hour to dock a ship at Hong Kong’s downtown ports. It costs $1,000/day to drop anchor in the middle of the harbor. While we picked up the students at the actual dock, all staff because we got there a week early had to take a tender vessel to the ship parked way out in the middle of the harbor. Attached to the ship was a floating platform that the tender vessel would pull alongside. From there you would walk up these metal steps attached to the side of the ship and then through the opening. There was a couple of things about this that made me shit my pants.
1. The floating platform was moving, a lot. Harbor water is suprisingly not calm. There were no railings, just your sense of balance.
2. The little stairway thingy that came out from the ship wasn’t long enough to meet the floating platform. So you had to swing your leg up and yank yourself up. The moving platform would also bang into the ship causing water to spurt everywhere.
3. I had heavy as fuck luggage with thousands of dollars worth of camera and computer equipment. One false move and either I or more importantly my equipment would fall into the watery crevice.
This was my first day on the job. My introduction to the program scared the shit out of me. Luckily there a couple doods from the engine room who yanked both me and my luggage up. Thanks for your help guys. I know you guys told me your names three times, but I’m sorry I didn’t remember them. I have trouble pronouncing names made entirely out of constenants.
