I met Bob Odenkirk at the Hollywood Farmer’s market.

One of the byproducts of living in Hollywood is you actually run into your heroes sometimes. On Sunday, I was walking through the farmer’s market and the following thought crossed my mind, “Holy shit, is that Bob Odenkirk buying kale?”

It was.

For those who are unfamiliar, Bob Odenkirk created HBO’s Mr. Show and has written on Conan, the Ben Stiller Show, SNL (he wrote Matt Farley’s motivational speaker character) and a tons of other stuff. He’s a comedic workhorse and has done an insane amount of really good work. Because of all this he’s one of my comedic heroes, so of course I approached him. But instead of saying “hey bob”, I said, “Excuse me, Mr. Odenkirk?” I immediately felt awkward and weird. I’m 31 and calling him Mr. It felt like the conversational equivalent of asking him if he wanted to order a magazine subscription which will benefit my public school.

He was super friendly though. I complimented him on the recent Built to Spill video he directed. We chatted about their upcoming show (at the El Rey on Oct 28, buy tickets here) and music in general, then bid adieu.

Even nicer than meeting your comedic heroes is finding out that your comedic heroes are normal doods who like vegetables.
