That’s my pa, ma and grandpa.

The story of how my mother and father met is a bit scandalous for the times, or at least it is in my mind. My father was a professor of Economics at The University of Scranton and my mom was a student at Marywood College. At the advice of a friend, she went to my dad for tutoring help in statistics. At the end of the tutoring session, my mom tried to pay my dad but he refused because she was a student. He kept saying that it was “gratis”, which is Latin for free. (Professors, always with the Latin.) She then suggested that he come over for a home cooked meal, which he accepted.

I remember my mom told me that Grandpa was so impressed that a college professor was coming over to the house that he met my dad at the door with a shot and a beer. I guess the meal went well, because my mom and dad made plans for another dinner. When he left, my dad said, “Next time, I’ll cook.” At this point, my mom swooned with the thought, “He cooks too?!”

Just a few months later they were engaged. When I asked my dad why he moved so quick with the engagement, he said, “I knew I had a good thing.”

My friend hates yellow candies so she gives them to me. She said that she was lucky I liked yellow candy. I said (ahem), "It's a tough job but somebody's got to chew it."
